A man says his ex tried to lure him back into her life by pretending to be pregnant and giving birth to his baby.
Mawande Sondamase, 30, says he has been loving a stranger’s child for three months.
The Khayelitsha man recently learnt that his ex, Claresia Lewis, had been sending him another woman’s baby pictures.
He says he got the shock of his life when a woman told him that the baby boy in the photographs is not his.
Mawande says he found out he was going to be a dad from his former goose, who lives in Mitchells Plain, last year.
He says he broke up with Claresia, 30, soon after because she was possessive, not allowing him to talk to any other woman and trying to control his movements.
“And in July she called me and told me that she had given birth to our son Ezrah Mawande Jr. Sondamase, but they would not be discharged until his jaundice had been treated,” he says.
“Every time I wanted to go visit them at home, she would have an excuse, she would tell me that her mom is around and she doesn’t want me to see him.
“I understood because her mom didn’t like me because I’m a taxi driver.”
He says even when he called, she would make up an excuse why he couldn’t hear his son.
“I would ask where the baby was and every time she would say that she just put him to sleep. I still wasn’t concerned because I had no reason to doubt that there was no baby.”
He says he’s been supporting Claresia financially while pregnant and when his son was born.
“I gave her R1000 every month and also any other time she asks.”
Mawande tells Daily Voice the truth came out when he posted a picture of his son on Facebook and his new girlfriend tagged him, allowing others to view the photo.
“In the comments someone went off about me using her baby’s picture. The person wrote: ‘Can you be sick to use pictures of someone else’s kid, this is sick… Seek help please. I can’t man, you’re f***ing weird’.
“I was shocked, I went straight to Claresia and asked her about this. At first she denied it but eventually told me that it was a stillbirth.”
The heartbroken man says he was shocked and angry.
“I asked her to at least show me his grave because they apparently had a funeral without me and I want to know where my son is buried but she won’t tell me.”
The disappointed man says he now believes there was never a baby, adding: “She only did this because she thought I would stay with her. Or maybe she wants revenge because she thinks I cheated on her.”
The Daily Voice visited Claresia’s Woodlands home along with Mawande, where she refused to answer any questions about the phantom baby.
Addressing Mawande, she said: “Why are you doing this, why are you exposing me? You could have just helped me out, Mawande. Can you think about what I went through?”
Her shocked sister, who asked not to be named, says she never saw Claresia pregnant.
“There was a time that I thought she could have been pregnant but then she lost the weight again. But she didn’t have a baby.”
