A Bayview woman who started doing styrofoam craft in primary school after watching the cartoon Heidi, has turned her “accidental talent” into an income.
Gakiema Rakiep, 52, says she loves arts and crafts, from making paper flowers to beading, and now spends her time making styrofoam art for birthday parties, baby showers and even tiered wedding cakes.
Using just a blade and a special machine that uses warm metal thread to cut the styrofoam, the mom of two started her own company called Famous Creations, which she runs from her home.
She uses paint, beads and faux gems to make original creations and she says never makes the same design twice.
“It makes me happy to create these special things for people’s special days,” she says.

“I think it is important that we celebrate important days and important people in our lives. Having something to remember it by is important.”
She says the children’s cartoon Heidi back in the day inspired her.
“Watching Heidi playing in the mountains with the animals inspired me to do my art,” she explains.

Gakiema lives in a Wendy house in her daughter’s backyard, where she runs her little factory.
Gakiema says she takes orders and her latest projects have been the best ones.
Among the Spiderman and Sophia the First-banners, there is also a beautiful miniature of the Ka’aba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

“Recently I am making banners for people going on Umrah and Hajj. I use photographs of the people and I make the decorations myself,” the self-taught crafter says.
“Drawing and sketching has always just come naturally to me. It is my gift from our Almighty.”
Gakiema says she did work for a large corporate and cannot believe how much people like her work.
“It is my greatest joy, next to my two children and my two grandchildren.”
