A gang fight led to the shooting of a 12-year-old boy who was standing at a shop in Yellowwood Street in Bonteheuwel on Sunday.
Soon after the wounded child was taken to hospital, a shootout ensued between the skollies, PAGAD and community members.
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie says: “This was part of the ongoing war between the Hard Livings and Dixie Boys in the area.
“The gangsters were shooting randomly and they hit the boy in the back. PAGAD was in the area for their own thing but they heard what happened.
“And then there was a fight with the gangsters, the residents also threw stones at the gangsters who were shooting and the police came in to stop what was going on.”
McKenzie says the police managed to disperse the people.
“Thankfully, there were no further injuries, no one has been arrested for the shooting. The boy is still in hospital and stable, I am in contact with the family.
“Yesterday everything went back to normal, like nothing happened on Sunday night.”
PAGAD’s Zhograh Kriel tells the Daily Voice members of the crime-fighting organisation were in a meeting when they were told about the boy’s shooting.
“PAGAD and the residents went to find out what happened and there was an altercation with the gangsters and then there were the shots which were fired.”
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi says the boy was hit when skollies shot at each other.
“In the process a 12-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Bishop Lavis police are investigating a case of attempted murder. The suspects in the matter are yet to be arrested,” he says.
