A woman, who made a video in which she accused police and hospital staff of failing to help a victim of sexual assault, has been exposed as a liegbek.

A week after making the claims on a Facebook Live video, Tasneem Delate, 31, could face perjury charges after she admitted to a senior police officer that she made false claims on social media and under oath.

On 27 December, the Athlone woman took to social media to slam the authorities for failing to help her friend.

In the 20 minute clip, which has gone viral after being shared nearly 3000 times, she claims she went to Heideveld Emergency Centre, Thuthuzela Care Centre and Manenberg Police Station for help for her friend.

In her dramatic video, she claims cops were gesuip on duty and that she was making the video to name and shame public officials.

“Manenberg Police Station was a hopeless case. They give you the J88 form and there was a procedure that had to be followed that wasn’t because the policemen were half drunk. They were still hungover so there was nothing anyone can do,” Tasneem said in the video.

In her tirade, she tears up as she claims they went to Hanover Park Day Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital where they were also allegedly not helped.

The video sparked an uproar among gender-based violence activists who demanded action.

Manenberg SAPS commander, Brigadier Sanele Zama, says he was immediately instructed to investigate the matter and got in touch with Tasneem’s father.

Zama says: “He told me he cannot give me her number but would pass my number on.

“She sent me a WhatsApp message and I responded, asking for the date and time as there are cameras in the Community Service Centre.

“We took this very seriously but then she started avoiding my calls.”

He says a police officer was sent to her home in Silvertown on 30 December to take her statement.

“She gave a statement under oath and the Captain brought it to me. The next day she called me and told me her guilty conscience is bothering her and that she lied, saying she was outside the station when she was never here at all.

“I told her if she wanted to retract, she must put it in writing and she sent me an email saying some parts are true and some parts are untrue, so what do we believe now?

“She has tarnished the police service for no reason and I want to caution people from making false claims on social media.

“I am submitting my report to the national office and from there it will be decided if she faces criminal charges.”

Tasneem confirmed to the Daily Voice that she was never at the police station or the hospitals she mentioned in her video.

She claims that when officers came to her house to take the statement, she felt “attacked” and that she was emotional when she made the video.

“I am really sorry for saying I was there when I was only saying what they told me, but I was not there myself. I will be making another video to clarify,” she added

Meanwhile, Zama says the alleged victim has not opened a case despite being given the opportunity to do so.
