A gang of armed robbers held a security hostage while robbing a jewellery store at a Cape Town mall on Sunday morning.
Police say five armed suspects robbed the Cape Jewel store at the Cape Gate Mall in Brackenfell shortly before 7am.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana says: “A case of business robbery has been opened for investigation by Brackenfell police following an incident that occurred this morning (Sunday) about 6.50am at a mall in Brackenfell.
“According to information, five suspects, two armed with firearms, perpetrated a robbery at the store.
“They threatened a security guard and broke the window of the jewellery store.
“They took an undisclosed amount of jewellery and fled the scene in a grey Toyota Quest.
“Police are following the leads in order to bring the perpetrators to book.”
In security footage, the men carrying bags can be seen approaching a lone security guard, dressed in a red jacket, outside the winkel.
While one keeps a gun to the guard’s head, the others break into the store.
The guard was not injured in the attack.
A shopper, who arrived at the mall just after 9am, expressed shock to see all the broken glass.
“Security guards were busy cordoning off the store, nobody wanted to say anything.
“Those skelms are very daring but were clever to come so early cos there were no shoppers that time.”
