The man accused of raping and killing his 18-year-old neighbour appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court on Monday as residents protested outside.

Sinovuyo Magatya was out with her friends last week Sunday.

On Thursday cops nabbed Makholwa Ngumla, 30, at his home in Zwezwe.

Sinovuyo’s uncle Wele Dyongo says the accused was last seen with the victim.

“We went to him on Tuesday and tried to find out about Sinovuyo’s whereabouts and he told us that they left together from the shebeen and when they got close to his shack, she met up with other guys.

“He even took us to the people she was standing with and they said they left him with her.

“On Thursday, the police went to his shack and found him sleeping as he had just got home from a night shift.

“The police found blood under his bed and on his towel and there was a wig which at that moment was thought to be my niece’s.

“He was arrested and later that day Sinovuyo’s body was found in a nearby shack, she looked like she had been strangled and stabbed behind the ear, her hands had defensive wounds, her jeans were pulled down to her thighs.”

Ward 95 councillor Xolisa Ngwekazi says they went to demonstrate outside the court in support of the family.

“The accused has robbed them of a loved one and we wanted the magistrate to take note so he never comes back to our community again, we don’t want him to get bail.”

Ngumla will be back in court on 24 June for a bail application.
