The month of love is drawing to a close but we couldn’t let it go without a dose of Cape Flats romance.
Mitchells Plain poet Bernard Fielies, a 48-year-old courier worker, motivational speaker and poet impressed us with his kwaai Valentine’s Day poems.
Bernard writes rympies about things happening around him, some of his poems are personal and some are about fictional characters.
The father of two also has a book called “ Na Die Ou Riversdal” and is currently busy with his second book called “ Soektog Na Die Son”.

Bernard says he writes about anything and everything: “ As ek ‘n duif sien loep, I write about that, there is a story in everything around us.
“I love making rhymes, and sometimes it gets me into trouble, like recently when we had a family gathering and a fight broke out, I wrote a poem about it and some of the family wasn’t too pleased with me, but it was how it made me feel mos.”
One of his latest poems called Liefling Van My Lewe, is dedicated to his wife of 19 years, Petula, and goes: “ My bokkie, my baby en my blom, jy laat soveel vreugde na vore kom, jy salf my siel en streel oor my stres en is dirigent van my hart se orkes.
“Ek het jou lief, sal alles vir jou waag net jý bring butterflies in my maag, al my vrees vir die nag laat jy vlug, in elke loadshedding is jy my lig.”
Bernard says he hopes to become famous but really just wants to inspire mense.
“I want my poems to encourage people and this will be my great reward,” he says.
