Car spinners in Ocean View are driving the ou mense crazy as they burn rubber and block public roads.

Ward councillor Patricia Francke says she is being inundated with complaints as the spectators suip in public and cause a disturbance, while public transport is brought to a halt.

“This spinning started about eight weeks ago in Carina Close where hundreds of people show up after 5pm on a Sunday and cars are spinning and popping,” she explains.

“The gatherings see over 400 people come out and break all Covid regulations as they perform and drink in public.

“They close off the roads and all public transport has to be diverted as they just take over a public street.”

Francke says elderly residents are most affected as the smoke and fumes fill their homes.

“There are elderly and sickly people living nearby who have to live with the smoke, fumes and noise pollution.

“I get so many complaints from elderly residents who cannot sleep as this goes on.

“A father came to me after his child was knocked by one of the spinning cars and despite the danger, the participants carry on. They jump on the roof of the church and show no respect for prayer times at the mosque,” Francke says.

A letter by the Apostolic Faith Mission church the committee highlights the problems.

“The after-effects leave undesirable outcomes with street marks, possible damaged street, tyre debris that is swept up and thrown into the yard of the church. To top it all, people literally climbed and ran on the roof of the church to watch the cars popping its wheels,” the letter states.

Rashied Davids of the Nurul Islamic Mosque committee says while they are not for or against the events, he believes authorities should give the spinners a safe space.

“It doesn’t affect our prayers because if you are here to pray, you are here to pray. We are not for or against the events but some of the participants have a real talent for spinning.

“I believe that the City must provide a facility that is closer for the community as Killarney Racetrack is too far and it is too expensive for our people to travel,” the holy man says.

Francke, however, calls on the participants to cease their activities immediately: “It is important that they stop these illegal events before someone gets hurt.”
