The Steenberg community is demanding answers from the police after a 41-year-old father of four was moered flou while he was allegedly wrongfully arrested on Friday.
Charmaine Cornelius says her son Chadwick Evans was standing in Sonata Street when “at least four police vans” pulled up just before 6pm.
She says they searched him for drugs but ended up hitting and choking him till the point that his body had to be dragged into a police van.
“They said they got drugs on Chadwick but the people standing in the road said that he had nothing on him,” says Charmaine.
“The one guy even choked him while he was laying on the ground.
“The people all took videos of what happened because they could not believe how badly the cops were beating him up while he never fought back.”
One video shows a cop laying on Chadwick and choking him as residents shout, "Hallo, is jy j*s, julle gaan hom vrek choke."
Another video shows cops dragging him into the back of a police van.
Charmaine, who operates a take-aways from her Beethoven Street home, says she went to Steenberg SAPS to see her son.
“I went three times to the police station, but every time they told me that I cannot see Chadwick and when I asked why he was arrested they just said that he had drugs on him but no other details.
“Chadwick has been off drugs for two years and he has four daughters that he looks after.
“I am not going to let this go, the police cannot just do what they want.”
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed Chadwick was nabbed for drug possession and that he will appear in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today.
