Retail giant Spar has issued a warning about a scam doing the rounds on WhatsApp.
Spar said this week it is not giving away vouchers of R2999 for Black Friday.
This after messages promising such vouchers started doing the rounds last Friday.
The message reads: “SPAR in honour of “Black Friday” in November, is giving away the free coupons worth R2999. I just received my coupon https://lupx.info/spar”.
By clicking on the link, users are taken to a website, which is a clone of Spar’s mobile site.
Users are then asked to do a quick survey of Spar’s services, also fake, before being prompted to send on the message to their contacts upon which you will receive the voucher.
But the only thing you get for your trouble is a redirect to an advertising network site, full of dubious products and promotions.
Spar said on its official Facebook page that the message is a scam.
“SCAM ALERT! Please note that SPAR has no association with this website. Please do not enter your details on this website and don’t share the link.
“Keep in mind that we will always make mention of a competition either in-store or on our Facebook page.”
A customer, who clicked on the link, says she is worried her personal details would be abused.
“I thought it was a wonderful gift from Spar, now with Christmas coming up, only to find out it’s a scam.
“I will be watching my bank account closely,” the worried woman says.
