Commuters failed another battle on Tuesday after trains were delayed for more than an hour due to vandalism.
Metrorail’s Riana Scott confirmed the delays and said it was due to signal faults, manual authorisation and vandalism.
The Northern Line was affected due to faulty points at Kraaifontein and speed restrictions between Brackenfell and Stikland, she said, while the Southern Line ran late because of faulty signals between Mowbray and Newlands.
The Cape Flats Line was also delayed due to defective signals between Hazendal and Pinelands, while services on the beleaguered Central Line ran late for more than an hour as manual authorisation had to be used between Langa and Sarepta, and Khayelitsha and Philippi.
“All trains operating via Maitland would also have been affected by vandalism at Maitland,” Scott added.
Meanwhile, on Friday, police arrested a man, 25, and a 30-year-old woman after they were caught vandalising rail infrastructure in Heideveld.
Following up on information, cops searched a house in Waterburg Street and found overhead cables.
Police spokesman, FC van Wyk, said the community tipped off cops about the vandalism.
He says large quantities of copper was found at the house.
They will charged with possession of stolen property.
“The suspects were detained at Manenberg SAPS for further investigation, and are due to appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate's Court once charged. The items seized, after being identified by relevant in-house technicians as rail overhead copper cables, were handed over to Prasa and it was identified by Prasa,” Van Wyk said.
