US lawmakers are planning to vote on a resolution requesting Vice-President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and strip President Donald Trump of his presidential powers and become the acting president.
The BBC said the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared plans with lawmakers to remove Trump from office before starting an impeachment process.
If their plan fails, the Democrats will introduce a charge of incitement of insurrection against Trump over his role in the invasion of the Capitol, the British broadcaster said in its report.
CNN said Trump is the first president in US history to be impeached TWICE.
His current impeachment comes after he last week Wednesday urged supporters to march on the Capitol, where they stormed the building, causing chaos.
The riot left five dead, including a Trump supporter and a Capitol police officer.
Trump is due to leave office on 20 January after losing the presidency to Joe Biden.
Pelosi described Trump as an imminent threat.
“The horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified and so is the immediate need for action,“ she was quoted as saying by the BBC.
The Democrats were expected to present the resolution on Monday and vote on it today.
According to Al Jazeera, for Trump to be impeached, the article must pass a majority vote in the House before it can be sent to the Senate for trial.
So far, 200 were in support of the impeachment in the 435-seat chamber.
An impeachment could prevent Trump from running for president again in 2024.
