Judging by her performance and the reaction from the judges, audience and mense on social media, the next Idol could very well come from Cape Town. Again.
Sixteen-year-old Yanga Sobetwa stunned judges last week at the Showstopper show when she performed Not Yet Uhuru in a tight-fitting military-themed outfit, and on Sunday she conquered again when she was called the top performer of the night.
Yanga performed Zahara’s Xa Bendingena Mama for which she received a standing ovation, and she also closed the show with This Isn’t Love by Jennifer Hudson.
Somizi was bowled over, but it was Unathi who rightfully announced she deserved bragging rights because she’d fought for Yanga during Theatre Week.
“It’s a Yanga overload and a wonderful overload!” Unathi exclaimed.
Yanga, from Delft, and Niyaaz Arendse, 22, from Ottery are now flying the flag for Cape Town in the Top 6, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Paxton Fielies, 18.
After eleven million votes, it was the end of the road for Xae from KZN.
This week saw the Top 6 perform two songs each.
In the first round, themed “Celebration of SA Music”, the artists chose singers who inspire them. In the second round the theme was “Love Songs”.
Niyaaz chose Mi Casa’s hit Jika followed by Brian McKnight’s Crazy - to which judges said he seemed to have found his niche.
Niyaaz thanked fans for keeping him in the competition, adding he was getting homesick.
“I miss my mommy’s spicy rice, roti and curry,” he says.
Idols SA is broadcasted on Channel 161 Mzanzi Magic on Sundays at 5pm.
