Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Elwyn Melville, his mother and a male person were asleep at a house in Korsten when a fire broke out on Friday night.
Naidu said the child’s mother woke up after smelling smoke and informed the man that the house was on fire.
“When they ran outside, they realised that the child was still in the house. By that time, the flames had engulfed the house and the child burned inside,” said Naidu.
The cause of the fire is unknown and cops opened an inquest docket.
