The Department of Social Development has confirmed it has removed a baby from its mother who was caught on video smoking tik in front of the child at the Bellville Taxi rank.

The video was recorded two weeks ago and went viral on social media last week.

Social media users were outraged after two videos of the young mother were circulated and the authorities found her.

Following a story in the Daily Voice, the Department of Social Development immediately launched an investigation.

DSD spokesperson, Cayla Murray, confirmed on Sunday the woman was found and the baby has been removed from her care.

“The child has been removed from the mother’s care, reportedly by a Badisa Trio safety parent. The safety parent does not want to be known to the public as she would like her confidentiality protected. No arrests have been made,” Murray said.

Two videos of the incident were shared on Facebook, receiving over 160 000 views.

In the first 52-second video, the mother watches her friend take a hit.

She then passes her baby to her friend before taking the lolly and putting tik in it.

They are with four men, two of whom are leaning against a taxi.

In the second video of 18 seconds, the mother can be seen exhaling the smoke from the lolly and trying to wave away the smoke from the friend holding the baby.

Bellville rank manager, Moegamat Shafiek Gordon, said they were not aware of the incident but would look into the matter as drugs have become a daily problem at the taxi rank.
