The teen is expected to make his first appearance at the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Members of Metro Police were in Hanover Park on Friday, 13 April, when they stopped and searched the teen between Surran Road and Helman’s Walk.
The teen was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco Star pistol and a magazine loaded with 9mm ammunition.
Cops say the firearm serial number was still intact and they are now trying to establish who the owner is, and if the weapon has been used in any crimes.
Philippi Police spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, explains: “Police confiscated the pistol and ammunition and arrested the 15-year-old male for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.”
Philippi SAPS Station Commander, Colonel Dennis Ables, says they are appealing for the public to assist in similar arrests.
“Police have a reward system whereby good money is being rewarded for positive information supplied to police about crime which results in the successful arrest and prosecution of criminals,” he says.
“Police will continue working around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators for crime and bring them to book.”
