A four-year-old boy was knocked over and killed, allegedly by a 17-year-old driving his dad’s car.
The incident happened in Tottenham Street, Freedom Park, Mitchells Plain on Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses say little Justin Julies had been picking up old sucker sticks to exchange for toffee apples when a speeding Toyota Avanza took the turn into Tottenham Street.
Justin was bending to pick up a stick when the car hit him.
The child was slammed into a sinkplaat-fence, his stomach and head ripped open.
It is alleged the 17-year-old driver then jumped out of the car and fled.
HARTSEER: Ouma Hilda Julies, 57
As shocked residents lifted the car off Justin’s head, a number of men apparently arrived and started pushing the car away.
Justin’s distraught ouma, Hilda Julies, 57, says when she arrived at the scene she asked where her grandson was.
“People were standing around, but nobody answered. I wondered why there were so many people for my little one. Then I saw him. My baby was dead on the ground,” she cries.
“His blood was everywhere. He was my favourite, always so playful and he loved to play with his friends.”
Community worker and neighbour, Widaad Williams, says Justin grew up in front of her: “The person responsible should get punished regardless of his age. From what we know, he was asked to change the battery in the van and instead took a drive without permission.”
According to Williams, the teen’s father took him to the police station.
This could not be verified as police did not respond to queries.
