The community of Wallacedene was left shocked on Friday when a taxi driver was brutally shot dead while waiting as his van was being cleaned.
It is alleged the 25-year-old man was shot by another taxi driver from the area as he apparently wasn’t from Wallacedene.
The man, who was sitting on a black plastic chair, toppled forward and he landed on his knees while his face hit the ground.
The incident happened around 12.30pm in the vicinity of La Boheme Street and Maroela Road at a taxi washing bay.
A 48-year-old female resident says: “This place is where the taxi drivers come and wash their vans.
“The taxi driver was just sitting on the chair waiting for his vehicle when another van pulled out and that taxi driver got out and shot him.
“He was taken by surprise, I think he thought that driver also came to wash his van.
“Everyone got a fright when the two gunshots went off. The shooter simply got back into his van and drove off like nothing happened.
“The deceased’s van has a CEY number plate. He must not be from here and they must have thought he is a rival or something.”
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says Kraaifontein police are now investigating a murder case which could be related to the ongoing taxi violence.
According to him, the shooter arrived on foot and shot and killed the taxi driver.
“The suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested,” he says.
