A group of skollies from Manenberg, believed to be part of a hijacking syndicate, are set to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after being found in a stolen car.
Acting station commander, Colonel Sanele Zama, says the men are members of the Hard Livings gang and were nabbed on Monday after they were found in a hijacked vehicle.
He says on Sunday, two cab drivers came to the station to report their vehicles stolen.
“In the first case, a Taxify driver from Khayelitsha reported that at 4.30am he accepted a trip from the Caltex garage but the pick-up spot is at the empty parking lot at Nyanga Junction,” Zama says.
“One man got in and told the driver to go to the GF Jooste Hospital site where two more people got into the car and held him up at gunpoint.”
The skelms took his maroon Honda Brio, Samsung cellphone, R1000 cash, his jacket and shoes and drove off.
CASE: Manenberg Police Station
Several hours later another cab driver in a VW Polo was hijacked in the same location.
Zama says the driver from Delft picked up two men at the same spot as the Taxify driver and as he turned into Duinefontein Road one of the men took out a gun and hijacked him.
The driver flagged down a Metro Police vehicle and the officers took him to the police station.
The next day cops found three skollies, aged 23, 30 and 35, in the Honda Brio and arrested them.
“The modus operandi was the same in both cases and we need the drivers to be aware of the risk,” says Zama.
“We suspect they are operating in a syndicate.”
