The 18-year old Nyanga schoolgirl who started a women’s only e-hailing taxi service has been receiving threats from taxi drivers accusing her of taking their customers.
Asiphe Mkhefa tells the Daily Voice she has received threats but denied reports that she had to quit her business and leave her community.
“Being harassed by taxi drivers is true but seeking refuge with my family? No Sir (that is not true),” she says.
The Grade 12 learner says she had to pause operations for two days due to the threats but is “not shaken by them”
“Threats were there yes, but I am not shaken by them. No, not at all.”
Asiphe started the WomenGo service to keep women safe from gender-based-violence.
The taxi service has been widely welcomed by women with others calling for it to be launched in other provinces as well.
SANTACO spokesperson in the province Gershwin Geyer condemned the abuse against Asiphe.
“We are not aware of the threats she received but SANTACO is against any form of abuse and gender-based violence. She can contact our offices to discuss ways to operate her business.”
