CAPE taxi bosses are working with the South African Police Service to bring in the driver who was filmed viciously attacking a motorist.
Footage of the violent attack at the intersection of Canon and Voortrekker Road in Maitland on 26 June went viral on Wednesday.
The taxi driver, who is a member of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA), can be seen rukking a 48-year-old victim out of his vehicle.
The driver is seen getting on top of the man, pulls out an ou kappie and then stabs the man multiple times.
The victim’s sister, Jameelah Pandey took to Facebook appealing for information in a post saying: “The incident began after the taxi driver repeatedly drove recklessly, cutting my brother off...
“Unfortunately, this road rage incident escalated and ended with my brother being stabbed multiple times by the taxi driver and possibly the gaatjie.
“By the mercy of Allah (SWT), his major organs were missed, and thanks to the thickness of his hoodie, the stab wounds to his neck were not fatal.”
She said that her brother was discharged from hospital on 1 July 2025 and is now recovering at home.
They have now also opened a case, with police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirming that Maitland police registered a case of attempted murder.
Van Wyk reported: “A seasoned detective was assigned to follow up on this incident and an affidavit was obtained to be investigated.”
CATA spokesperson, Nkululeko Sityebi said the driver is currently in the Eastern Cape as he is driving long distance and will be back in Cape Town on Monday, when he will report to a police station.
Of the driver servicing the Gugulethu via Maitland route, Sityebi said: “CATA condemns the violent act of the driver and the road rage amongst our drivers.
“We’re working with the police. We contacted the driver telephonically and the owner and are working with authorities to bring the perpetrator to book and face the consequences.”
Police ask that anyone who saw the incident, or the person who took the video clip to contact Maitland SAPS or Crime Stop on 08600 10111
