Zurenah Smit, the wife of murdered Stellenbosch wynboer Stefan Smit, 62, has been released from jail.

On Wednesday, Smit, 54, and one of her co-accused, ex-cop Derek Sait, were granted R5000 bail on gun-related and theft charges in the Stellenbosch Magistrates’ Court.

Last week, they were granted R10 000 bail on the murder charge.

The duo and Sait’s brother-in-law Steven Damon were arrested for Stefan’s murder in December, 18 months after he was shot at his farm.

Damon, who was employed as Stefan’s bodyguard, did not apply for bail.

The bail hearing for charges of theft and the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition related to two guns stolen from Smit’s safe in 2018.

At the time, Sait was employed to investigate attacks on Smit’s farm.

It is believed one of the guns was used to kill him.

One of the guns belonged to Stefan’s ex-wife and one to his deceased mother.

They are expected back in court on 5 March.

According to their bail conditions, they would be under house arrest and may only leave their homes for medical, business and legal appointments.

Smit was shot and killed in front of his wife and a family friend visiting from Switzerland on his Louiesenhof farm when masked intruders entered their home through an unlocked door on Sunday, 2 June 2019.

He was shot multiple times in the head and body.

Sait, Damon and Sait’s brother, Bradley van Eyslend, were on duty that night, but allegedly did not hear the gunshots although they were reportedly in an adjacent room.
