DESPERATE: Ubambano needs assistance to continue after the lockdown
A group of students from Khayelitsha who are giving back to their community are in desperate need of more help.
The former pupils of Manyano High School in Khayelitsha have started a non-profit organisation and have been collecting clothing and school uniforms to hand out to the needy in their community.
Anaso Yantolo, 18, says donations have been slow due to the lockdown and they need help.
“We know what learners from schools in our township need and so in 2016 we decided to start an organisation called Ubambano to help others,” says Anaso.
“Some learners struggle with school uniforms which makes us go door to door and ask households for any items they might have to help them.”
She says they started out helping learners from their former school, but as time went by they decided to help other schools as well.
They’ve now discovered that there’s also a need for casual clothes for teenagers and children.
“During our door to door campaign we started asking for clothes also and that became a huge success because we could see how much the learners appreciate what we give them.”
Yantolo says since the lockdown their operations have come to a halt because they cannot do door to door collections anymore.
“When the lockdown regulations kicked in we had to stop, but we want to continue where we left off since the regulations have now been relaxed.
She says in addition to clothing and school uniforms, they also want to donate food and toiletries to those most in need.
