More than 200 angry Blikkiesdorp residents marched to their local police station demanding cops put an end to the bloodshed.
A resident says in the past three weeks, 12 people have been murdered in the area.
Last Thursday in Q4 Block, five people were shot and killed and two wounded when three suspects entered the dwelling where the victims were sitting and opened fire on them.
In the latest incident on Wednesday afternoon, a 57-year-old woman was shot and injured in N Block when gunmen in a Toyota Quantum entered her house and opened fire.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, confirms an attempted murder case was registered for investigation.
“According to the complainant, a passing Toyota Quantum’s occupants opened fire at her,” he says.
“She suffered a gunshot wound to her left leg and was admitted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.”
SCENE: A man was shot dead in ongoing violence in Blikkiesdorp
A community leader, who asked not to be identified over safety concerns, says they are tired of the violence and they want cops to take action.
“This is the situation, you hear gunshots at night and when you wake up in the morning, you realise someone has been shot. You don’t know who is next.
“The station commander has only been here when the five people were shot last week. The City and police are gambling with our lives.”
The resident says they demanded to speak to the station commander, but no one came out to address them.
Police did not respond to queries about the march.
DEATH TOLL: A woman’s body found in the bushes in Delft
Blikkiesdorp was established 12 years ago as a temporary relocation area for people waiting for houses.
It is believed between 7000 and 9000 people live there now.
The City this week indicated that a stretch of land along Symphony Way in Delft has been allocated for housing for Blikkies residents, but said that it could take years to develop.
Councillor Malusi Booi, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, explains: “The City has done a survey of all the potential legitimate beneficiaries in Blikkiesdorp with the aim to, in the long term, accommodate everybody in the new housing development based on the National Housing Policy criteria.
BLOODSHED: Another gunshot victim in Blikkiesdorp
“We have identified two sites along Symphony Way which will be developed for State-subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing to enable the relocation of Blikkiesdorp residents, but given the scale of the development, the process will take a few years.
“A project steering committee has been established and residents of Blikkiesdorp should be aware of the status of the project.”
He said planning is at an early stage and a completion date cannot be given yet.
“In the meantime, the City can confirm that some residents who were living in Blikkiesdorp and have qualified as beneficiaries in terms of National Housing Policy criteria have already received housing opportunities in the Delft housing project, which is currently underway.”
