HURT: Shirvano Swartz of Heideveld
A 10-year-old laaitie from Heideveld was hospitalised after a reckless driver crashed into the child while slatting doughnuts in a playpark.
The angry mother of Shirvano Swartz has now called on Manenberg Police to arrest the driver who she says is endangering the lives of children.
Rene Swartz, 43, says her son was left traumatised after being flung from the car’s bonnet and falling on his head.
“It happened on Tuesday just after 5pm. I was in my house when Shirvano was playing in the park between the three courts with his friends,” she says.
“The neighbours came running to my house screaming, saying he was knocked over by the man who is always spinning the tyres of his silver BMW.”
Rene says she ran to check on her child, who was carried home by panicked neighbours.
“The one neighbour who saw the incident says the man was spinning his tyres and Shirvano was walking to the slide when the driver lost control and the car hit the child.
“She told me my child was flung over the bonnet and landed on his head and the man just left him there.”
Shirvano was rushed to Red Cross Children’s Hospital with head injuries and bruises to the left side of his body.
“They told me that he looked OK, but said I must watch him closely to see if he gets sick.
“The next day I took him to a private doctor because he started swelling up and has big bruises on his face and left hip.”
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms the matter is being investigated by Manenberg police: “A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by Manenberg detectives after a 10-year-old boy was knocked down by car driven recklessly in a parking area.
“No arrest was made and the child received medical attention for his injuries he sustained.”
Rene says she wants the driver arrested: “He is a danger to our community. Why does he rev his car and make doughnuts in a park?
“We send our children to play there so they can be safe and now he comes and makes it unsafe. I am very kwaad because he could have killed my child.
“We also don’t know if there will be any permanent damage because the doctor told me head injuries can have an impact on the child later on in life.”
