Members of the Gugulethu Spinning Pitch showed they provide more than just a fun venue for car enthusiasts on Sundays after they helped a resident recover his hijacked vehicle.
Panza Dlova, organiser of the spinning pitch, said resident Zolani Sithole was hijacked on Sunday, 14 November, in NY6 in Gugulethu and came to him for help the next day.
“When Zolani was coming from a butchery, guys came and smashed the windows and stole the car.
“He came to us here at the pitch and we told him that we will find his car in a few hours and later the day on Monday we found it in NY22, around the corner from where he was robbed,” he says.
“The guys who stole the car heard that we were looking for them and they dumped the car and ran away.”
The Gugulethu resident says he and a group of men including Mlondolozi Msoki of the Kalawa VW Club found the blue VW Polo Classic with minimal damage and returned it to its grateful owner.
“When we got the car, the sound system was stolen and the windows were of course broken but Zolani was so happy to get his car back that he burst into tears. Doing stuff like this is what we are all about, the spinning pitch is a way to bring the community together and that they can come to us for any issues they have,” says Panza.
At the beginning of the year, Panza and residents got together to host car spinning events on a field in NY147 every Sunday.
“If people are suffering from gender-based violence, then we also go around and help in any way we can and we are also committed to stopping all the gang fights,” he adds.
