A Lotus River woman has spread some festive joy by feeding over 200 kids.
Beryl Williams, who has run a soup kitchen for more than 20 years, said she wanted to put a smile on the kids’ faces with the plates of food she served.
The unemployed woman said poverty in the area drove her into her kitchen.
“My passion has always been to share the little that I have with the community,” she said.
“I may not have a lot, but there are always kind-hearted people who assist with the groceries.”Yesterday, Beryl’s menu consisted of chicken akhni and curry with white rice, party packets, ice lollies, rolls and cakes.
“We catered for 200 children, but then we ended up with more adults than children and there was enough for everyone.
“We had help from Pick n Pay (Constantia), they sponsored the rolls and cakes.
“A lady who assists me on many drives, Brenda Appolis, donated the party packets and I bought all the other stuff.
“All the cooking was done at my house as I run a soup kitchen with the help of my husband.
“I also need to mention that the communication officer for the Grassy Park police, Captain Wynita Kleinsmith, is also always here to lend a helping hand.”
Yolanda September said she was invited by Beryl and joined the queue in Ada Avenue.
“I don’t know how many people were there in total, maybe about 300,” she said.
“I couldn’t just stand around, I assisted with giving out food to them.
“It was an honour to help her, this time of Covid has seen a lot of people go to bed hungry.
“And there were children who said it was their first meal of the day. I’m glad I was part of this and the food was delicious.”
