Manenberg police are on the hunt for a Malawian man who has gone on the run after viciously stabbing his girlfriend to death in their shack.
Residents in Tambo Village were left traumatised earlier this month when the lifeless body of Phumeza Madze was found wedged between two shacks in Jenny Street, as she tried to escape her knife-wielding attacker.
According to her best friend, who asked not to be named, Phumeza is originally from the Eastern Cape and had been dating her boyfriend for 10 years.
Residents say the couple’s three-year-old daughter witnessed the bloody attack on 4 October and ran to tell neighbours what had happened.
At the time, they told the Daily Voice that on arrival in Cape Town, the man had nowhere to live and she took him in.
But the relationship soured when Phumeza discovered that her boyfriend had a Malawian wife that he kept secret in Gugulethu.
They explained that she lived like a slave and was held hostage by the suspect, who beat her everyday.
Manenberg station commander, Brigadier Sanele Zama, says the man goes by two different names and has gone on the run.
“He is Malawian and is known as Ismail Rasidi and Blessings Shahidi and went on the run after the murder,” he says.
“We are appealing to anyone who knows where he is to contact the police so he can be prosecuted for this gruesome crime.”
If you know where the suspect is hiding, call Detective Sergeant Keating on 082 559 4713.
