A Manenberg mom is pleading for help to bury her son who was shot five times while defending himself during a fight over the weekend.
The heartbroken mother of Bronwyn William Groepies, 28, has been left devastated and confused by the shooting during the early hours of Sunday morning in Letaba Road.
Mom Yvonne, 54, says the young dad had visited his girlfriend’s home on Saturday night and during the early hours of Sunday morning, she was woken up by frantic neighbours who told her that her son had been shot.
“I was sleeping so I don’t know what the argument was about or what happened exactly, but the neighbours came to wake me up and told me he was shot,” she says.
“They rushed him to Groote Schuur Hospital where he died.”
On Monday the mom went to the morgue to identify her son’s body.
Yvonne says she was told that her son was shot five times while defending himself during the fight and doesn’t know who his killers are.
Manenberg Police Station Commander Brigadier Sanele Zama says police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the fight.
“According to the reports a 28-year-old man was shot and killed on Sunday at about 2am.
“At this stage we have confirmed there was a fight, but we are unclear what the fight was about.
“The matter is under investigation and no arrests have been made as yet.”
Yvonne says Bronwyn was employed as a delivery man at SA Breweries, but lost his job last year and now the family is sukkeling to bury him.
“He used to work on the trucks for SAB, but I am not sure how they lost their jobs,” she says.
“He was not in a burial society so we do not have funds to bury him.
“I feel heartsore losing my son like this.”
His girlfriend was too traumatised to speak yesterday.
