World-renowned Islamic scholar and the imam of the Azzawia Mosque and Institute in Walmer Estate, Sheikh Seraj Hendricks, 64, passed away yesterday from Covid-19.
Sheikh Fakhruddin Owaisi, a student of Sheikh Seraj, says he’s been ill for some time now.
“He’s been very sick for the last two to three years. He’s been in and out of the hospital.
“Then he contracted Covid, I’m not sure how, and even then, he didn’t cut himself off from the community.
“He was the topmost scholar in Cape Town, from a family of generational scholars who are recognised worldwide.
“I’m very close to his family and his kids are my students.
“What made him so great was the width of his knowledge and yet, he was one of the most tolerant amongst the ulema (Islamic scholars).
“He never attacked or judged anyone and he was never involved in any controversies,” says Sheikh Owaisi.
The Muslim Judicial Council said in a statement that South Africa has lost one of its most prominent scholars.
LEGACY: Sheikh Seraj Hendricks has passed away
Sheikh Seraj previously served as the mufti (legal expert) of the MJC.
“Sheikh Seraj was a luminary who contributed largely to the religious, spiritual, and intellectual development of our community and many students who benefited from his knowledge.
“He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of the pursuit of knowledge, teaching, spirituality, and dedication to his Masjid, the Azzawia Masjid and his community,” the statement reads.
Sheikh Seraj leaves behind his beloved wife, Rhoda, and his three children, Rashid, Nuha and Alia.
