A suspected social media sex pest who lured women with a promise of a job appeared briefly in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Jonathan Basson, 25, was arrested and charged with rape and will be applying for bail later this week.
The arrest follows a Daily Voice article published last week, warning of a possible serial rapist operating in the Steenberg/Lavender Hill areas.
Basson had allegedly been operating under Facebook profile names such as Reyngardt Smit and Ryan Williams.
He is alleged to have lured his victims by advertising jobs for personal assistants or administrative clerks and promising salaries ranging from R10 000 to R13 000, “including weekends”.
Lucinda Evans, the founder of Philisa Abafazi Bethu, is asking people to come together to oppose bail.
“We will ensure that no more women will be harassed and violated in this vile way,” she says.
“This man had preyed on vulnerable desperate women looking for work. He had enough time to plan how he would do this. It came to an end and we need to keep it that way to protect our daughters and sisters.”
The matter has been postponed to Tuesday.
