A Bonteheuwel scrap dealer and his assistant have been arrested
following an investigation into cable thefts in Manenberg and Heideveld.
Manenberg police Brigadier Enolium Joseph says the dealer and his assistant were nabbed last Wednesday after they were found with plastic insulation cables used for high voltage copper cables.
Joseph says the scrap dealership in Bonteheuwel Avenue was raided following an ongoing investigation.
Last month Manenberg police arrested 11 men, aged between 20 and 37, who were caught red-handed stealing cables.
They also arrested a 36-year-old woman who has been labelled as the “mastermind” behind the syndicate.
“All of them have appeared in Athlone Magistrate's Court and are currently in Pollsmoor Prison. The investigation continued and led us to Bonteheuwel,” Joseph explains.
“While the scrap dealer has a legal permit, he was found in possession of property belonging to the City and so they were both arrested.”
Joseph says officers also went to skud uit Kreefgat, where Manenberg SAPS shut down the area and searched two houses.
“This area is seen as a no-go area as several police vehicles have been damaged and even set alight as SAPS members ran for cover,” he says.
Six males, aged 29
to 57, were arrested for possession of
5 400 abalone worth
R100 000.
