Three skollies accused of gunning down pregnant mom, Sadiqah Newman, 26, will stay in the mang for the duration of their trial.
Dahniero van Rooyen, Romondo Swartz and Grant Arendse along with their female companion, Phutuma Mntunjani, were denied bail at the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday following an online petition by her family and SA Women Fight Back organisation which garnered more than 78 000 signatures.
Sadiqah’s relieved family were seen crying outside court after the judgement was given where the men, alleged members of the Dixie Boys gang, were labelled as liars and a danger to the community.
Mntunjani was arrested after being found in possession of a modified pistol, believed to be the murder weapon, just hours after the shooting.
In her application she begged the court to grant her bail saying she did not know what the gun was used for.
Ouma Nadeema says the judgement is a victory for the family who has been having sleepless nights since Sadiqah’s death.
“It won’t bring our daughter back, but at least somebody is put away and not messing with other people’s lives.
“The magistrate even said they are a danger to the community, which they are.
“We are happy with the outcome. I can’t even console my grandchildren who cry every day because I cannot console myself.
“As September comes to an end, this was the time we were expecting her to give birth.”
The case was postponed to 13 November for further investigations.
