SABC television is following in the footsteps of their radio counterparts.
SABC Chief Operations Officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng confirmed that SABC 3 will have 80 percent local content from July 1.
He was speaking to FIN 24 at a function where the public broadcaster was awarding production contracts for more local TV shows.
Moetsoeneng says: “If you look at our platform - SABC 1 and 2 is more local content… I said on television, SABC 3 it will be 80% local content. On other channels you have 90%”
SABC 3 has traditionally been catering to mostly English speaking viewers, screening more international series and movies.
Last month the SABC announced that it’s 18 radio stations would play 90 percent local music, seen as a huge boost for the local music industry.
Local musicians have welcomed the move, saying it’s something they’ve lobbied about for years.
However, there are unconfirmed reports that Metro FM and 5FM have not supported the move, and kept local content down to 50 percent, but the SABC management have not publicly confirmed this.
