Friends of motor mechanic Yaseen Petersen, who died after colliding with a bus, held an emotional memorial for him yesterday in true petrolkop style.
Despite wet conditions, dozens of Ford owners pulled up at Liberty Promenade to hold a motorcade for Yaseen, who was a big Ford fan.
About 70 Fords, of all makes and years, drove in convoy on the route Yaseen was taking before he died.
The 22-year-old died after he drove into a bus which took off the roof of his Ford Sierra in Tafelsig last week.
Witnesses claim the bus driver was at fault because he was speeding when he approached the intersection and came to an abrupt stop, straddling two lanes on AZ Berman Drive.
Yaseen couldn't swerve in time and hit the back of the bus.
His mom and a friend who was with him were fortunately not injured.
The three were on their way to visit someone in hospital but Yaseen turned around because he forgot his wallet.
Yesterday, family, friends and members from Yaseen’s club, Ford Fanaticz, as well as Ford 4 Sports, Ford Freestylers, Ford Spinners and Spin Good gathered to bid him farewell.
Everyone wore T-shirts displaying photographs of Yaseen.
They drove from the mall to the scene of the accident on AZ Berman Drive, where a moment of silence was held, before they broke the silence with a helse revving “just like Yaseen would have wanted”, according to one driver.
The Ford lovers then drove to Yaseen’s home in Bianskloof Street, Tafelsig where they handed over food parcels, clothing, and banners and stickers in memory of their friend to his hartseer mom, Karriema Petersen, 39.
Yaseen, who graduated from False Bay College, had just started his apprenticeship.
“I never knew he knew so many people and that he touched so many hearts,” the mom said.
“Since he was a little boy he loved Ford. His first car was a Ford, he passed away in one and he was also working on another.”
