Winter is yskoud, and what better way to beat the cold than with a warme beanie and blankie?
The Beanie and Blanket Drive takes place in the Cape Town CBD and everyone is invited to join the sleepover on Saturday night, says founder Yusuf Hope.
Yusuf, Phaldie Brown, Rashieda Floris, Shafiek Abrahams and Sakeena Frenchman are the founders of the project based in Manenberg.
Yusuf, 44, says: “On Saturday we will be handing out beanies and blankets to the homeless on the streets of Cape Town.
“We will also be spending the night sleeping with the homeless and we humbly request donations from anyone who will be able to assist us with our event.
“We will be handing out soup and sandwiches on this day and we’ve managed to secure four pots of soup so far."
He adds: “We will be spending the night on the streets just like the homeless, without a warm cup of coffee, a blanket, electric heaters, no fireplace or hot water bottles - just us, a piece of cardboard and the cold floor.”
Sakeena Frenchman, 42, says they also want to shine a torch on the many “hidden and underprivileged” organisations working in and around Mitchells Plain.
“We do this for the love of it, it’s The Hoppers' way of having fun,” she says.
