A Mitchells Plain man who allegedly raped a young woman on a construction site is recovering in hospital after he was moered to a pulp by angry residents.
Tempers flared in Swordfish Road in Rocklands on Wednesday after residents discovered that the 20-year-old woman had been attacked in a toilet on the site.
According to a witness, who asked not to be named, loud screams were heard when the woman’s friends found her unconscious in the toilet along Spine Road just after 5am.
“The woman knows the man and they smoke drugs together,” says the resident.
“She went with him to the toilet where they smoked drugs and he raped her inside the toilet. She passed out during the rape and when she woke up, she found her pants was off and her shoe removed and realised she had been raped.”
When Daily Voice visited the scene on Wednesday, a 70-year-old ouma, who asked not to be named, said the enraged community dragged the alleged rapist across a veldjie where they beat him with a wooden chair.
“I gave my chair to the security guard on the site to sit on and they beat him with it until it was broken. He was bleeding everywhere and then the police were called to the scene and they arrested him and took the girl away.
“The mense were very kwaad and told him he is lucky they didn’t hit him vrek,” says the granny.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, confirms the arrest and says: “Mitchell Plain police responded to a complaint this morning of a man being assaulted by the community in Rocklands.
“The initial investigation on the scene led to the immediate arrest of a 50-year-old man. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
“Once charged, the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on a charge of rape.”
