Crimefighters in Hanover Park were rewarded for their hard work on Thursday when they received a donation of two-way radios.
The brave aunties from the award-winning Blomvlei Neighbourhood Watch were applauded by Subcouncil 17 for their efforts in keeping their community safe at the handover yesterday.
Proud patrollers wore their bright green reflector bibs as they gathered at the Athlone Civic Centre to receive their new equipment.
Ward councillor Magadien Davids says being the only accredited neighbourhood watch in his ward, the Blomvlei NHW members had proved their commitment to reducing crime.
“They are the only accredited neighbourhood watch in the ward and have completed all the training provided by the City.
“The 15 two-way radios are being handed over to assist them in their efforts.
“They do need other items, such as torches, and we have committed to providing this by 1 July with the new budget,” said Davids.
Watch chairperson, Sadeeka Valentine, says the radios will go a long way to assist patrollers.
She says they currently rely on a WhatsApp group to share information as many patrollers are unemployed.
“We are parents working for our community and some of us are unemployed so we cannot really afford the data and airtime.
“Now that we have radios we will be able to communicate better. We are very grateful to the City of Cape Town and our councillor Magadien who always supports us,” she says.
