CASE: Victim Rhimondy Chemeone Apollis, 27
A Melkbosstrand rugby player has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman and her mother.
It is alleged the 19-year-old man and his friends were drunk and were racist towards the woman and her elderly mother, calling them hotnots.
The alleged incident took place on 13 December in a parking lot in 6th Avenue.
Rhimondy Chemeone Apollis, who is 37 weeks pregnant, says the rugby player, whose name is known to the Daily Voice, drove into their car and an argument ensued.
“We were leaving the shops when the car they were in hit ours. They tried to run and my mom stopped them. They were drunk and about a group of four,” she explains.
“The man threw racial slurs at us and punched me and called me a hotnot and said nothing will happen to him even if we go to the police.
“He prevented my mother from taking pictures of the car for evidence and he hit me while I was talking back to him.
“I was hurt and fell on the ground and my worried mother picked me up. I was lucky that my baby was not hurt in the process.”
The player, a fullback for a local rugby team, left the scene after the incident with his friends.
The man, who cannot be named until his first court appearance, was arrested in Langebaan on Tuesday afternoon.
SAPS’ Colonlel Andrè Traut confirmed the arrest.
“A case was registered by a 27-year-old female for assault, crimen injuria, reckless and negligent driving and leaving an accident scene.
“The suspect, a 19-year-old male, was arrested [and is] due in court once he has been charged.”
“Another case was registered by a 55-year-old female for attempted murder, and no one has been arrested as yet.”
He said both cases are still under investigation.
*The Daily Voice previously reported that the player belongs to the Lions Rugby Club which is incorrect, he in fact belongs to another rugby team.
