Silverlea Primary School in Athlone is aiming for a tech-savvy future after scooping a R350 000 prize from the Growsmart Competition.

The winners were announced at a prestigious event at V&A Waterfront recently.

The school came out tops in the Literacy category among 375 participating schools in the province.

Each of the three participants from Silverlea – Lyndell Morkell, Milani Kama and Sadiyah Padayachi – also received a prize worth R25 000 which will go towards their education.

Proud principal Sharon Coetzee says this is a much needed boost for the school, which has 820 learners, and she’s glad to have accepted the invitation to be part of the digital competition in April.

“The R350 000 will be used to uplift the school’s technology, so purchasing white boards and projectors is high on a list,” she adds.

Teacher Zeenat Lernay says: “All learners worked very hard to prepare for the rounds and were given a Growsmart newspaper to study from.

“They sacrificed their intervals, home days and holidays to study.

“The win was a big surprise but through hard work, teamwork and dedication, we made it.”

Participant Sadiyah says her new laptop and printer will help with her projects while her R25K prize will go towards her school fees, uniform and stationery.
