Checkers is in the sin bin and has been forced to apologise for a Springbok cake on display in one of its stores with the slogan “Quota Squad”.
A Cape Town customer, Nathan Kolbe, shared a photo on Twitter of the display, which was reportedly taken at Checkers in Protea Heights, in Brackenfell, on Friday.
The display table had two cakes one was iced with the All Blacks’ emblem and the other with the Springbok badge. This was ahead of Saturday’s Test match between New Zealand and South Africa.
Rugby transformation, and particularly quotas, are hot topics in South Africa, who played in a thrilling
16-16 draw against the world champions in Wellington.

On Sunday, Shoprite Holdings, which owns the Checkers chain of stores, distanced itself from the offside cake, and said it was a bad decision that was taken by a bakery employee and does not represent the supermarket’s view.
“Checkers distances itself from the message included on a Springboks cake displayed in a store on Friday and confirms it was immediately removed when brought to branch management’s attention and addressed,”’ said the statement by management.
