The principal of a Mitchells Plain school has died from Covid-19 complications.
Celine Meyer was the acting principal of Duneside Primary School and passed away last week, her husband Clement, 56, said.
The couple had known each other for most of their lives; they were in primary school together and dated for 14 years before they got married in 2018.
Celine was described by her husband as an energetic woman who loved to plan and organise events, reports the Weekend Argus.
“Every occasion for her had to have a spectacular event, she took two years planning our wedding,” he said with a smile.
Meyer is one of at least 2 000 teachers who has died as a result of the virus since it hit South African shores in March last year.
Meyer was ill since December and Clement says she had co-morbidities.
“On Christmas Eve, we noted that we had a slight cough, especially my wife. The cough got worse on Christmas day and other symptoms started to develop so the next day my wife and daughter got tested and her results came back positive on the same day.”
The principal, who was also a foundation phase teacher, was admitted to hospital seven days later.
“She, being the person who she is, when she got her results she immediately got all the medication, added vitamins, zinc and all these other medications to help boost one’s system. We were sure we were going to beat this,” Clement said, adding that he also tested positive.
“I was lucky enough to be able to see her during her time in hospital because we were in the same hospital.”
Celine had been teaching at Duneside Primary School for 31 years.
“She would leave home very early and was never back before 6pm, that is how dedicated she was to her work. Her death is a huge loss,” the grieving husband said.
