The Democratic Alliance and City of Cape Town have been accused of abusing taxpayers’ money.

A photo of a City law enforcement bakkie allegedly towing a DA election trailer was circulated on social media, with a DA supporter smiling broadly next to it.

The #GangsterismMustFall movement in Manenberg condemned “the usage of this van that is meant to be on patrol and keeping our communities safe”.

In a statement, the movement’s Roscoe Jacobs called on Mayor Patricia De Lille and Alderman JP Smith to resign for allowing the “abuse of state resource by their political party for its elections campaign”.

“This is an insult to the citizens who entrust them by voting them into power in 2011. This is the basis for our call for voters to vote for a party and councillor that will advance the struggle for a gang-free Cape Town,” he said.

But City bosses say the picture is misleading.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says: “The ANC circulated this picture claiming the Law Enforcement vehicle had towed the DA campaign trailer. This is not the case.

“The trailer is actually backed up to the van, it was not towed by staff, check the trailer wheels, it’s too near to the van. The vehicle towing the trailer is on the other side, facing away from the van.

“The van was parked behind the trailer. The trailer was coupled to Roelf Maree’s bakkie.”

The ANC has distanced itself from the photo and Jacobs was not available for comment.
