A young man, who was going to testify against the gunmen who allegedly shot him, has been murdered after the accused’s bail was denied.
Police sources close to the investigation say Moegamat ‘Moejat’ Blankenberg, 26, was shot and wounded last month in Manenberg and that he opened a case against the gunmen who are allegedly members of the Americans gang.
The two suspects appeared at the Athlone Magistrate's Court on Wednesday where their bail was denied.
Blankenberg was walking on the corners of Duinefontein Road and Gamka Street in Manenberg just before 5pm when he was shot in the head by an unknown man in a drive-by shooting.
His distraught mother, Gaironesa Blankenberg, rushed to the scene and says she is not sure why her son was killed: “I don’t know what happened, I was at work. I don’t know anything.”
The police source says he was gunned down because of the court case.
“This guy was a complainant in an attempted murder. The accused (two of them) appeared, and their bail was denied. Then he was shot,” the source says.
“He was shot last month and he made a case against these guys who are Americans. Hulle wou seker hê hy moes die saak terug trek.”
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, says no arrests have been made.
“A murder case has been opened for investigation following a shooting incident on Wednesday, 23 May at 4.40pm at Gamka Street, Manenberg.
“The victim died due to his injuries. Police detectives are following up on all possible leads.”
