Comedian and community activist Soli Philander gathered his friends in the entertainment industry to be part of his Mandela Day feeding project at the Springfield Terrace in District Six.

On Saturday, stars like Madeegha Anders, Loukmaan Adams, Wayne McKay, Irma Miller and Ramaine Barreiro-Lloyd stieked uit.

Soli, who was born in District Six, says he made the food and the celebs’ job was to go door to door and have an “encouraging” chat with neighbours before handing over the parcels.

“It was incredible, the sheer outpouring of love, the affirmation for my community, we are from a space where children were safe and women were valued and family was everything and we are going back there,” says Soli.

Ramaine praised Soli for his community spirit: “Soli is doing amazing work. What struck me the most was as he walked us round to show us this amazing place, right at the foot of our beautiful mountain, he could literally name every single person he came across, who lived in every house, so you know it’s home for him and extremely personal, he’s gonna change things for the residents of Springfield Terrace and I’m gonna be there every time he asks.”

Actor and singer Loukmaan Adams says: “It was lekker being part of this initiative, it was amazing to see how well connected Soli is, we tend to forget how long Soli has been around.

“It was nice to see that people didn’t have to stand in a queue as the normal soup kitchen set up. The meals light up peoples day and this spreads positivity and light.”

Comedian Wayne McKay says: “I was invited for coffee by one of the residents and loved it, but I had a duty to still drop off food and cool drinks. The residents of Springfield Terrace seem to be the forgotten people of Cape Town, but what I experienced is what South Africans have forgotten - the amazingly warm, happy, intelligent, funny and hospitable.”
