SKETCHY: There are various claims about the Eerste River incident in which two people where killed in a road accident SKETCHY: There are various claims about the Eerste River incident in which two people where killed in a road accident
A man and a woman were killed in a hit and run in Eerste River while on their way to work in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The two were walking when they were killed by an unknown driver in Strand Street, Kleinvlei.
They were apparently on their way to the Kleinvlei Train Station from where they take the train to work every day.
By last night, details of the incident were still sketchy.
Some people on Facebook claimed the driver was a woman who had sped away after a near-hijacking, and drove into the man and woman.
Commenting on the Eerste River, Greater Blue Downs and Blackheath Friends Facebook page, Cyrilene von Willingh wrote: “Hulle sê hulle wou die meisie hijack toe jaag sy weg in die kar en ry die twee mense om.”
Another person, Furdie Snell, claimed the female driver had swerved to avoid a cyclist when she hit the two people.
Police say the deceased could not be named as their next of kin have not yet been informed.
Kleinvlei residents tell the Daily Voice that Strand Street and the area close to the station are a hotspots for robberies and hijackings.
“We need more patrols here in this area. I don’t know the victims, but tomorrow it can be me or my mother or my brother,” commented an upset Veronica Martin, 45.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says the incident happened around 5am.
“Two bodies have been found lying on Strand Road, Kleinvlei, Eerste River,” he said.
“It is alleged that a motor vehicle hit them. It is unknown what the ages of the victims are. A culpable homicide case has been opened for investigation.”
