A Hanover Park oupa has laid fraud charges against a Surrey Estate woman he says conned him out of R100 000 after promising to invest the money with Old Mutual.
The family of Francisco Edwards, 75, claim the woman, who works at the Claremont Old Mutual branch, took advantage of the illiterate man when making him sign papers.
The sickly old man told the Daily Voice that during 2018, he was introduced to Nadeema Galant through a mutual friend.
“I sold my house in Athlone and I met this woman.
“She told me she works for Old Mutual and can help me grow my money,” he explains.
“She said if I give her R100 000, she can get me another 10% on that in six months.
“So I transferred the funds and she made me sign papers.”
Francisco says after constantly requesting his “Old Mutual papers” and not receiving them, he became suspicious.
“I asked her every time because I wanted to see my Old Mutual papers.
“So I spoke to my son, Shareef, and he looked at it.
“He contacted her and she paid me back R50 000, but never paid the other money.”

The angry oupa went to Athlone Police Station and registered a fraud case against Galant.
“She came here so nice and this has put me under a lot of stress,” he says.
“I already have heart problems and I can’t believe someone would do this to an old person.
“I am just worried she is conning other old people.”

Police spokesperson, Captain
FC van Wyk, confirms the case
was registered.
He says the docket was sent to the senior prosecutor at Athlone Magistrates’ Court for a decision.
Old Mutual spokesperson, Suzanne van Schoor, confirms they are aware of the case.
But says they are conducting an internal investigation to get more clarity on the issue.Galant initially told the Daily Voice she would respond, but seemed to have changed her mind on Tuesday and told the newspaper she has “no comment” on the issue.
