A Scottsville man saved the lives of three children when he rescued them from two burning hokkies.
The children, aged one, three and seven, were inside one of the structures when another boy played with a lighter and set the place alight.
Fanny Miller, the owner of the Greymour Street property, says she is grateful the hero, Rodney Joubert, had reacted so quickly.
“I’m grateful to Rodney because nobody wanted to go in and save the children when the flames were so high,” she says.
“Family members were huddled together already crying, but only he dared to go in and see where the children were.
“I held up the hose and wet him completely. He ran into the hokkie and brought all three children out,” says Fanny.
“I prayed so hard while he was in there. Because of him all the children are alive.”
HERO: Rodney Joubert ran in
Rodney says he could not believe people were standing around while the children were being burned alive.
“The flames were huge and the place was already falling apart. They told me there were children inside and I just went for them.
“My friend, Shaun McDonald, also helped to try and put out the fire. It felt good to save them,” Rodney says shyly.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Edward Bosch, said it took the 12 firefighters about half an hour to extinguish the fire.
“Ten persons were displaced and all are accounted for. No injuries were reported,” Bosch said.
