Police are investigating a shooting in Bokmakierie, Athlone, in which one man was killed, two men were wounded and a six-year-old boy was shot in the leg.
Witnesses say that just after 8pm, a blue Toyota Camry passed the corner of Bokmakierie and 8th avenues, slowed down and opened fire on everyone in the street.
They say the shooters’ faces were covered and more than 20 shots fired in the direction of the victims.
According to police sources, the three men were known members of the Hard Livings gang.
Monray Lufalo, 35, died on the scene from his wounds while Moegamat Prins, 27, was shot in the chest and Faeez Birds, 27, wounded in his arm and buttocks.
They were taken to Groote Schuur Hospital, where Birds’ condition was said to be serious.
ER24 spokesperson, Russel Meiring, confirmed one man died of a gunshot wound.
“Two men were tended to by paramedics on the scene. One man had sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and buttocks, leaving him in a serious condition, while the other man had sustained a gunshot wound to his chest,” Meiring said.
The six-year-old was shot in the leg and taken to Red Cross Children’s Hospital for treatment before paramedics arrived.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, says the circumstances of the incident are under investigation.
“An investigation is underway following an incident which left a 35-year-old man fatally wounded and three others, aged six and 27, wounded,” he says.
“The motive for the murder and attempted murders are yet to be established and the suspects are yet to be arrested.”
