A Cape Flats cop spent the weekend behind bars after he was arrested by his fellow police officers for armed robbery.
Police sources say the young detective, from Nyanga Police Station, was busted in Rondebosch on Friday afternoon after it was discovered he was part of a group of armed robbers who held up staff at a Jet in Capricorn Square.
“He is a detective constable and is stationed at Nyanga SAPS,” says the source.
“They arrested him on Friday for the armed robbery which happened at Jet in Capricorn on 1 November.
“In that robbery, three black males entered the shop and held the staff at gunpoint as they stole R4000 from the till, cellphones and R500 float.”
The source says the men escaped and the case was registered at Muizenberg Police Station.
“When they arrested him, they confiscated a docket unrelated to this case in his possession and took his official firearm away.
“He was charged with business robbery and taken to the holding cells at Muizenberg Police Station.
“It is not clear how he was identified or what role he played, but it was confirmed that he is a SAPS member.”
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the arrest and says: “A 22-year-old constable stationed at Nyanga detectives was arrested on 8 November in connection with a business robbery that occurred in Muizenberg.
“Once he is charged, he will appear in the Muizenberg Magistrates’ Court.”
